When you send all of
your HTML files from your computer to your IofM.net account, you're
doing what's called "uploading." Let's say you have an HTML file on your
computer. You use the File Manager to send a copy of that file from your hard
drive to IofM.net's computer. Since IofM's computer is connected
directly to the Internet, people who know the address of your page can go to it
and view it on their browsers. The address might look something like
this:
http://www.television.iofm.net

"Downloading" works the opposite way. Instead of sending a file from
your computer to another computer, you're receiving it. Therefore, when you go
look at a Web site, what you're actually doing is downloading a bunch of HTML
files and pictures and sounds to your computer. |
You can also use your
own program to upload and download things. The program we recommend in using is
called WS FTP. A shareware is available to download for free by going
here.
The great thing about
the Web is how fast it is. Once you upload your files, they are there on the
Internet, available to whomever wants to look at them. And if you notice that
you spelled "television" wrong or something, you can change the HTML file,
upload the corrected copy, and the change will appear on people's browsers
right away. |
