| An Oxford
University Graduate, who started his working life with Plessy
Telecommunications working on transaction systems, message relays and barcode
technology, Berners-Lee is the one man who's the most influence on shaping of
the modern Internet. Whilst working for CERN he proposed a global hypertext project to be known as the World Wide Web in 1989. Berners-Lee started work in 1990 on the first Web Server (httpd) and client (WorldWideWeb) running a wysiwyg hypertext browser and editor under the NeXStep OS. By the end of the year this client was being made available within CERN and it was released into the public domain. His work continued until the end of 1993, including specifications for URL's, HTTP and HTML. In 1994 he joined the Laboratory for Computer Science at MIT where he now holds the 3com Founders Chair and directs W3C. |
