| Introduction to the Internet | ||||
| The story of the Internet starts as far back as 1957
when ARPA ( Advanced Research Projects Agency ) was formed as part of
the US Department of Defence. With a mission to advance science and technology for military use, ARPA bought together some of the most brilliant technological minds in the US. By necessity, these researchers were located at several centres in Universities across the US. It soon became apparent that a communications infrastructure was needed to keep them all in touch. ARPANET was commissioned in 1969 to fulfil this requirement, and the first node appeared at UCLA, and then at others. In 1972 ARPANET got its first public airing at an International Conference on Computing Communications, a move that prompted the formation of the INWG. This addressed a need for the development of agreed protocols, the first being Telnet. Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn presented the idea of the Internet for the first time to a meeting of the INWG at Sussex University, and established the FTP ( File Transfer Protocol ). The turning point was the early 1990's, with ARPANET ceasing to exist and the World Wide Web specifications released to the public. The following year saw ISOC ( Internet Society ) chartered. The governing body of the Internet was born. |
