| Sollaghan |
A wholesome meal for
men
Sollaghan was traditionally
served for breakfast on Christmas day. It was also eaten on Shrove Tuesday,
called in Manx Oie Ynnyd (Eve of the Fast).
It was served for dinner, while supper consisted of meat and
pancakes. There was a saying which warned that such a good spread might not
always be had - " At Shrove Tuesday supper if thy belly be full, before Easter
Day thou mayest fast for that".
Brown some
porridge oatmeal in a pan in fron of the fire, then add a knob of butter. Skim
the broth pot and stir the liquid into the oatmeal until the mixture sticks
together.
